Abstract

The mechanisms of fretting and fretting fatigue are briefly reviewed. Seven important variables which influence fretting fatigue strength are discussed and various methods of minimizing fretting damage are presented. Based on the observed facts from previous investigations, an hypothesis is proposed to estimate fretting fatigue strength. Because frictional phenomena for various contact material combinations are important factors in estimating frettng damage, an apparatus was designed to determine the coefficient of friction under specified fretting conditions. Two sets of data on long-life fretting fatigue strength, obtained by experiment, are compared with predicted values resulting from the hypothesis. The predicted values and experimental results are found to be in good agreement.
