Abstract

I. INTRODUCTION

In the last 20 years, much research has been devoted to the study of wrought metal components under service loading situations. Relatively little work has been done to understand the fatigue processes present in ferrous-based cast materials. Methods developed to predict the fatigue response of wrought materials are often misapplied to cast materials. For example, mean stress parameters based on the reduction of static or fatigue properties are not appropriate for gray cast iron [1]. It is the intent of this research to help improve the understanding of basic fatigue mechanisms occuring in cast irons and to help in developing some simple analytical tools to analyze the fatigue resistance of cast iron components.
