Abstract

The morphology of the graphite in nodular iron significantly influences the mechanical properties. This paper mainly involves the observation of crack growth in nodular iron. An elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameter DJ was used to correlate the crack growth data. The DJ parameter was refined by the formula that was proposed by Shih and Hutchinson. A material constant for short cracks that was proposed by Haddad, Smith, and Topper was adopted in this study. Load control tests were conducted in addition to strain control tests to determine the applicability of the model to various loading modes.
