Determination of the Fatigue Notch Factor in Thin Plates

Abstract
A method is presented to determine the fatigue strength reduction factor, Kf, for uniaxially loaded notched plates. This includes an equation for Kf which is derived by correcting a critical zone of metal at the notch root for the effects of the stress gradient and the volume of this zone. The effects of local plastic action are included to extend the usefulness of this equation to all fatigue lives. Sample calculations to illustrate the use of the equation are also given.
